可疑的土堆（Suspicious Dirt Piles）是自然生成的物品。它們能在世界上隨機找到。如果忽略了一定時間它會改變位置。一旦檢查後，可疑的土堆將會被角色揭開，然後會被指著方向的動物行走足跡代替。 然後另一堆的土堆將會大約生成在指著方向的兩個畫面外。
當揭開最後一個足跡時（大約在揭開在 6 至 12 次之間）角色會提醒玩家有一隻生物非常接近玩家，然後就會有一隻無尾象或鋼鐵羊生成而不是有繼續有足跡。找到鋼鐵羊的機率從第 1 天的 5% 逐漸增加直到第 100 天的 33%。無論經過了多少個季節，直到找到的生物被殺前，牠會一直留在世界上。
巨人王朝
在巨人王朝DLC中，可疑的土堆除了引導玩家找到鋼鐵羊外還有可能會找到一隻座狼。第 100 天時，將有 16.5% 的機率找到鋼鐵羊，另有 16.5% 的機率找到座狼。
多人版饑荒
多人版饑荒中，春季下雨時在綠洲沙漠追蹤可疑的土堆，將會找到伏特山羊而非無尾象。
在座狼之年活動期間，在世界中有啟動了的座狼聖像時調查可疑的土堆，可疑的土堆會引導玩家去活動限定的包含一隻陶土座狼和十二隻陶土獵犬的布景。
